SHOW-OFF AND TELL #42 - Mark Cassell - The Shadow Fabric

#42 in the Show-Off and tell feature brings us, sadly, to the end of a week-long special about its author. Tonight’s book is The Shadow Fabric by Mark Cassell.

I have mentioned a couple of times this week how much of an approachable, decent fella Mark Cassell is. I hope that throughout this week you have picked that up as well and also that you will go pick up some of his books and give him the support he deserves.

If you decide to go and buy this weeks featured book, The Shadow Fabric, this post will give you an idea of what you will have in your hands.

The cover alone gives you an idea of the mysterious happenings on the inside of the pages and indeed, if you meet Mr Cassell at a con, you will be able to see the hourglass in person.

SHOW-OFF AND TELL #41 - Angela Marsons - Play Dead

#41 in the Show-Off and Tell series is another one that I hold very dear to my heart. Play Dead by Angela Marsons.

If you have never heard of Angela Marsons or you have never read her books, I have two things to say to you. Shame on you, and go fix it right away!

I have been lucky enough to follow this woman’s career from the beginning of the journey, with her first book in her DI Kim Stone series, Silent Scream. When I first read Silent Scream, I knew Angela was in for a bright career, but I don’t think anyone was prepared for the explosion that happened.

If you need any more encouragement to go check her books out, then go read my reviews at the bottom of the page. If you don’t want to take my word for it then check out these facts.

SHOW-OFF AND TELL #40 - Daniel Marc Chant - Into Fear

#40 in the Show-Off and Tell series is one that has just come out this week. It is Into Fear by Daniel Marc Chant.

You can read the review at the bottom of the page. It is worth reading giving the quality of the book and it’s high score for a collection.

I have to advise that the one featured in this Show-Off and Tell is not the one you will get when you buy the book. I am extremely lucky to have in my possession a very early proof copy with a different cover on it. One that didn’t see the light of day.

Not only am I delighted to own a copy of the book but, to have this version gives me an extra opportunity to stick two fingers up at one and all! That’s what showing off is all about! Isn’t it?

SHOW-OFF AND TELL #39 - Scream Horror Mag - My First Review

#39 in the Show-Off and Tell feature is a purely self-indulgent showing off of something that I achieved this year which makes me immensely proud and emotional.

My first review in a print version of Scream Horror Mag!

When I first started reviewing for Scream it was a huge honour for a magazine such as this to put their faith in a fledgling reviewer like me. It gave me a well needed confidence boost that what I was writing about books actually meant something to people who read my reviews. I am eternally grateful to Scream for giving me the opportunity to share with their subscribers my thoughts on what I read.

This is the edition I made it into:

SHOW-OFF AND TELL #38 - Dead Roses: Five Dark Tales of Twisted Love

#38 in my showing off section is a book that I got last year and to this day it remains one of my all-time favourite books. This goes both for the content between the covers and the actual cover itself.

Dead Roses: Five Dark Tales of Twisted Love.

This little beauty is from the crowd I call the Bad Apples Crew. Evans Light, Adam Light, Edward Lorn, Jason Parent and Gregor Xane.

When this one came out I was just launching Confessions. I came up with this crazy idea of doing a week long stint of interviews and along with the review, managed to pull it off. I have to honestly say that it was probably a bit rough round the edges but it worked and was the fore bearer of all that has come since.

The cover on this one was done by Mike Tenebrae and is still one of my all-time favourite covers.

SHOW-OFF AND TELL #37 - J.G. Clay - Tales of Blood and Sulphur

#37 in the Show-Off and Tell is the latest one to fall through my letterbox. At the time of typing this, it has arrived just in time for the end of J.G. Clay week.

It is the wonderful short story collection, Tales of Blood and Sulphur.

I have mentioned before that I came across this one completely by accident and it is one of those accidents that I will be eternally grateful for. This, my friends is one of the greatest collections of short stories I have ever read. I will be surprised if any collections I read in the future will come close. Now there is a challenge if ever I wrote one!

Getting to know Mr Clay over this past couple of weeks while doing the interview and other stuff, it has hit me what an absolute genuine gentleman he is. Unassuming, modest and always happy yet with a writing style that is an absolute killer. It is a great, great pleasure of mine to add this one to the shelf.

SHOW-OFF AND TELL #36 - Andrew Lennon & Georgia Lennon - A Taste of Fear

#36 in the Show-Off and Tell feature is one of my most recent buys. A Taste of Fear by Andrew Lennon and his daughter Georgia Lennon.

I managed to meet up with Andrew at Horror Con UK this year and shared many a conversation with him and many a pint. Don’t let his timid looking picture and calm demeanour on social media fool you! This man can sink a pint or two.

He always comes across as a quiet sort of a fella. He is in many ways, but I have to be honest and tell you that he is one of the nicest fellas I have had the pleasure of meeting on this horror journey. He is very hard working, very knowledgeable and honing his talent beautifully. I really hope he turns into the fantastically well know writer that I know he has inside of him.

SHOW-OFF AND TELL #35 - Duncan P Bradshaw - Hexagram

#35 in the Show-Off and tell feature finishes off the Duncan P Bradshaw week.

It’s Hexagram.

This is one that just arrived in the post one day. I hadn’t been asked previously to review it so it just arrived in the post one day. Don’t get me wrong, I am certainly not complaining about that fact. I love getting books to review from Duncan and The Sinister Horror Company and they know my door is always open to them. It’s just an extra special surprise when it comes through the door totally unexpected. It’s like Christmas for a ten-year-old every time this happens to me.

The purpose of this one tonight is purely and simply, to show you what you get when you order a book directly* from Duncan at the Sinister Horror Company. They come to you in the normal brown box or standard jiffy bag but it’s what’s inside that will make you feel like the most special person in the world.

When you open the box or jiffy bag, you will be greeted by your book, wrapped in black tissue paper with the Sinister Horror Company sticker holding it all together.

*this is when you order directly from the SHC website, not from Amazon.

It looks like this:

SHOW-OFF AND TELL #34 - Matt Hickman - Jeremy: Evil Has One Name

#34 in the Show-Off and Tell is one of the first books I actually picked up in person.

It’s Jeremy: Evil Has One Name by Matt Hickman.

I recently met Matt at Emcon in Nottingham. This was my first con and to be honest the event itself fell a bit flat to me but grabbing some lovely books and getting the opportunity to meet some people for the first time and get them to sign their stuff was, for me, the highlight of the weekend.

I had a bit of a surprise for Matt that weekend as well in the form of a gift for him from my wife Jo. It was a rather fetching T-Shirt featuring the cover of Matt’s favourite book, with the touching slogan on the back which read: I Love The Horse Cock.

He was a good sport about it even though I didn’t see him wear it and he still signed the book for me!

SHOW-OFF AND TELL #33 - Paul Flewitt - Poor Jeffrey

#33 in the Show-Off and tell is Poor Jeffrey by Paul Flewitt.

This book is unique for a couple of different reasons. Firstly, it was the first signed book given to me in person. I met Paul recently at Emcon in Nottingham and he was extremely eager to promote his books with whoever would listen.

Refreshing to see someone prepared to do anything to self-promote and get their stuff out there.

Also, this is the first thing I have read by Paul. I only vaguely knew him through Facebook before Emcon and that was only fleetingly. I didn’t even know he was an author to be honest.

During a couple of smokes outside a rather dreary Emcon, we got chatting about writing and reviewing and how hard both can be and Paul promised me a copy.

True to his word, as soon as we were inside, I got my copy.

This is it:

SHOW-OFF AND TELL #32 - Thomas S Flowers - Emerging (Subdue Book 2)

#32 is the Show-Off and Tell feature is following on from last weeks. It’s the beautiful Emerging (Subdue Book 2) from Thomas S Flowers.

This is without doubt one of my favourite series ever. If you want to know why then check out the reviews at the bottom of the page.

The physical books themselves are absolutely wonderful. You know when you get a book and you just fall in love with the cover and the presentation right down to the font and how the print looks on the page? That’s exactly how I feel about these books.

The fact that they were surprise packages makes them even more special.

This is my copy.

SHOW-OFF AND TELL #31 - Thomas S Flowers - Dwelling (Subdue Book 1)

#31 in the Show-Off and Tell series is a book I dreamed of having a signed copy of since I read it, but never thought I would.

It’s Dwelling (Subdue Book 1), by Thomas S Flowers.

There is one very simple reason why I wanted it. It’s one of my favourite books ever and, in my opinion, one of the finest examples of writing I have ever had the pleasure of reading. This story is made up of so many different elements and emotions that it will scare you, make you laugh and make you cry, all in one sitting.

Apart from that fact, the production of the actual book itself is superb and trust me, you really need to have this book in your hands to appreciate that cover!

SHOW-OFF AND TELL #30 - Jason Parent - Unseemly

#30 in the show-offs is another from my good friend and totally awesome, panda loving author, Jason Parent. It’s his latest novella, Unseemly.

It is always an absolute pleasure to get books in the mail from Jason. I am pretty sure I have a signed copy of all of his books now which makes me a very happy bunny.

I don’t know if he sends me them because he likes me or due to the fact my wife seems to be madly in love with him. He is referred to in this house as “the other husband”. If I were him, I would be more than slightly worried about this.

Especially as Jo has his address.

Anyway, this is my copy of Unseemly:

SHOW-OFF AND TELL #29 - Ken Preston - Joe Coffin: Season One

#29 in the Show-Off and Tell is another recent one that sort of came to me out of the blue and I was absolutely delighted that it did.

It’s Joe Coffin: Season One by the wonderful Ken Preston.

I had seen this book all over the internet in the social media world and was intrigued as to how it would work with it being in the style of a TeeVee series. Also after hosting a guest review of it from Mr Kit Power a few months back, I couldn’t wait to give it a go and see what all the hype was about. You can read Kit’s review here by the way. Just in case you missed it.

At the time of this post going live, Joe Coffin: Season One is currently free for your Kindle.

SHOW-OFF AND TELL #28 - Iain Rob Wright - Hot Zone: An MCU Thriller (Sarah Stone Book #2)

#28 in the show-off and tell is another from one of my favourites, Mr Iain Rob Wright. This is a slightly different one though. It’s one of his thrillers, Hot Zone: An MCU Thriller (Sarah Stone Book 2).

Now this one, again, holds a very special place in my heart for a couple of reasons. The first is really simple. It’s by one of my all-time favourite authors, so to have any of his books on my shelf is just superb. To have a signed copy of his work sitting there makes me very proud indeed.

SHOW-OFF AND TELL #27 - Evans Light - ArborEATum

#27 in the Show-Off and Tell is another from my good friend, excellent writer and all round top bloke, Evans Light.

I have made no secret in the past and I will proudly say it again:

This is my favourite EVER short story / novella. It’s ArborEATum.

When myself and Evans struck up a little trade agreement across the pond last year, this was top of my list to try and get a signed copy of.

This story just totally blew me away. It is so atmospheric and imaginative and creepy and it encapsulates everything that I love about a short horror tale. It is honestly that good. This is one of the few stories that I pick up and read at regular intervals.

Anyway, this is my copy:

SHOW-OFF AND TELL #26 - John Connolly - Signed Stuff

#26 in the Show-Off and Tell feature is one that is a little bit different. It’s a couple of signed invites from John Connolly. There is a bit of a story behind this one.

It was April 2014 and the new John Connolly book was due out. He was doing a book signing, in my current home town of Newcastle. This would be the first opportunity I would have to meet the man himself, so decided to go along.

I decided to take along my then bolshie thirteen-year-old son, really just to give him something to do on a dreary Saturday afternoon.

When we got to Waterstones where the signing was taking place, I was a bundle of nerves. I was actually going to be in the same room as one of my absolute heroes, and I couldn’t cope. My son was very nonplussed at this and extremely embarrassed. The lady from Waterstones was getting everyone in the queue for the signing. She came to us and asked where my book was. I apologised and said I didn’t have one. She told me I would have to leave if I didn’t buy the book to get signed.

I had no money on me, and no bank cards or credit cards to pay for the book. I looked at my son and he was gutted, for me. He could see the tears welling in my eyes at the fact my chance of meeting my hero had gone.

We left Waterstones and went across the road for a coffee. I at least had some cash to treat him to a Starbucks, just not a book for my hero to sign for me.

I sent a text to my wife to tell her what had happened and her being her, got straight on to John’s publicist to see if they could sort something. She was in America and could do nothing but tell us to go back and try again. I didn’t have the heart. I was gutted and embarrassed and just wanted to go home and lie down in a darkened room.

SHOW-OFF AND TELL #25 - J.R. Park - Upon Waking

#25, can you believe we have reached the quarter century already?

This week’s big show-off is a book I read recently that still brings tears to my eyes. Upon Waking by Justin Park.

This was my first foray into the writing world of Mr Park. I had sampled his wares, so to speak, as one third of the wonderful Sinister Horror Company, with the production of such beauties as, The Black Room Manuscripts: Vol 1. If you like anthologies, this is one for you. Super stories and all proceeds go to charity

Also watch out for Vol 2 coming soon with another fantastic line up.

So, back to Upon Waking. Why did it bring tears to my eyes?

Number one was this beautiful hard backed copy that appeared out of nowhere. I was so grateful to Justin for this one.

SHOW-OFF AND TELL #24 - Dark Chapter Press - Scream Horror Mag

#24 in the Show-Off and Tell feature is slightly different. This week we have pictures of Issue 34 of Scream Horror Mag.

Why…..I hear you ask?

Well, in sticking with most of my posts this past week, it’s all about the wonderful fellas at Dark Chapter Press and in particular Mr Jack Rollins.

I make no secret of the fact that I love their books. For some strange reason Mr Rollins seems to like my reviews of his books and has used a couple of quotes from my reviews for a couple of his books.

Now he is an up and coming publisher with high ambitions, ones that I truly believe he will attain by the way, so where does an up and coming publisher pimp their wares to try and get the best publicity? Well apart from the just around the corner and brand new Confessions of a Reviewer Website, Scream Horror Mag is a pretty good place to start.

This is Issue 34 that the Dark Chapter Press advert was in:

SHOW-OFF AND TELL #23 - Stuart Keane - Grin

#23 in the Show-Off and Tell feature literally only arrived with me yesterday. What was even better than that was that it was a total surprise.

Grin by Stuart Keane.

Mr Keane apparently felt sorry for me and thought I was being a right miserable twat so he would cheer me up with a copy of this! I couldn’t be more delighted right now and I aim to be a miserable twat as much as I can in the future.

I am absolutely delighted to be able to add this to my signed shelf for more than one reason.

The first reason is obviously because it is a beautiful book. Trust me this one is superbly produced.
