MY REVIEW:
This is part two in Iain Rob Wrights new A to Z of horror series.
Dean is
twelve years old. He has been invited to stay over at his new friend Wendell’s
house. Wendell has just recently moved to the area from Germany. He lives with
his Dad, his Mum having died a while back. He seems to have everything,
including a huge four poster bed in the middle of his bedroom. As they settle
down to sleep after a busy night, Dean discovers the true meaning of the
saying, “Don’t look under the bed”.
I’ve said it
before and I’ll say it again, Iain Rob Wright could write the packaging for a
packet of toilet roll and make it enjoyable! In this latest in his series of
shorts we have a simple tale about a sleepover. It may be a simple topic. It
may be a seemingly impossible task to write something creepy about a sleepover
in a twenty page short story. Mr Wright does it with ease, again.
This is old
school horror. It reads like an episode of the Twilight Zone. Dean sees, hears
and feels things that scare the absolute bejesus out of him while, apparently,
no one around him can see, feel or hear the same things. It’s psychological
horror for Dean which turns to physical pain and suffering in a horrific way.
When you
come to the end of this story you will have a smile on your face. The closing
scene makes you go “Ahhhhhhh light bulb moment” and while it explains things
and settles your nerves again, it doesn’t take away from the horror side of
things.
If you like
old horror films that make you jump when something appears from out of nowhere
and ones that you would scream “it’s behind you” at your telly, this is for
you. It’s one to fill a half hour lunch break or a perfect filler between
bigger books if you want something not too taxing. Above all, it’s Iain Rob
Wright.

Book Synopsis:
Dean is staying overnight at his rich friend’s house,
looking forward to a weekend of fun. Wendell has everything, you see, including
a giant four-poster bed in the centre of his bedroom. Big enough to hide under.
While ahead there may be fun and games aplenty, one thing
is for sure.
Whatever you do, DON’T LOOK UNDER THE BED.
